Complaints

Complaints against solicitors are dealt with by The Law Society’s Consumer Complaints Service.

Most people have a good experience with their solicitor, but sometimes things go wrong.  The customer complaints service are the part of the Law Society which helps people who have a problem with their solicitor.

They deal with complaints about poor service by solicitors and applications for ‘remuneration certificates’.  This is a free service they provide for checking to see whether your solicitor’s bill is fair and reasonable (they can only do this if the work the solicitor has done for you has done for you has not involved court proceedings).

They also receive reports about professional misconduct by solicitors.  These are dealt with by the Law Society in its role as a regulator of the solicitors’ profession.

Some members of the public, appointed by the Master of the Rolls, are involved in their decision and policy making.  An Independent Commissioner, Sir Stephen Lander, monitors the service.  His role is to make sure that the service works fairly and efficiently.  The Legal Services Ombudsman reviews the work they have done.
